It’s been 17 years of madness in San Francisco for KushArora, and the party has just started. Kush Arora has beensculpting cultural sound in San Francisco and beyond,branding his own signature imprint on bass driven music.With a hefty discography with collaborations/remixesranging from Lady Chann to Eight Frozen Modules, ElephantMan to Balkan Beat Box, his sound has been sought afterby futurists worldwide. Arising from the experimental sceneof San Francisco, he carved his early chops not only instudios but working on sound design for the likes of DavidLynch and games like Lord of the Rings. All shades of Dub,Garage, Dancehall, and Indo-Caribbean influences mergeinto his unique “Dread Bass” sound that has found himcompared future riddim makers as Stereotyp, Muzlimgauze,T he Bug and even Adrian Sherwood.Kush’s Club nights have brought him to hosting “Surya DubRadio” on KPFA 94.1 FM Radio Monday nights, which is theLargest Independent Station In the western part of the USA.Whether dj’ing bashment at a dubstep party, or working onAngolan riddims with Jamaican vocalists, Kush is always upfor something new. Having just finished an EP with BaileFunk vocalist Z uzuka Poderosa, and releasing a hecticschedule of tropical, uk funky, and tribal sounds, hisreleases have been found on labels as diverse as Top Billin,Crunchtime Recordings, to J Dub and ESL. Hisperformances range from Live Ableton Tribal sessions to fullon Bashment and Funky with MC Z ulu, Juakali, or Z uzukaPoderosa, and he dj’s everything in between. Recentproduction work has Kush working with artists such asElephant Man, Cutty Ranks, Lady Chann, Balkan Beat Box,Z ion I, Nickodemus, and collaborating alongside folks asStereotyp, Jahdan Blackkkamoore, and J. Boogie. Do not befooled however by his experimental nature, this man will slayany dancefloor he sets foot on. With these futuristic stylings,Kush wears many hats all rooted in Dub and Electronica.T hese influences can be heard throughout his diverse,10-record discography.Active in SF, Kush is a member of Surya Dub which wasawarded Best Club Night by SF Weekly for two consecutiveyears (2007-08) and has been at the center of the WestCoast Dread Bass, Dubstep, and Electronica movement.Kush would find himself on the road frequently asambassador for the Surya Dub Crew, opening for the likesof Flying Lotus, T he Bug , SubSwara, Bassnectar, andT hievery Corp. His tracks have been remixed by the likes of Rogue State,Eskmo, and England’s Steakhouse Crew. His work hascaught attention of Pitchfork Mag, who referred to him as a“laptop musician extraodinaire”, BBC 1’s Mary Anne Hobbsdubbed his Brooklyn To SF release “a beautiful piece ofwork”.
