Central Processing Unit — universally shortened to CPU Records — is the Sheffield label that has done more than any other to carry the city's Bleep lineage into contemporary electro. Founded in 2012 by Chris Smith (CPSmith) and distributed by Kudos, it releases on a self-imposed 8-digit binary catalogue system that caps the label at 256 records for its entire life, and it has spent that budget on the definitive modern electro roster: Cygnus, Silicon Scally, Plant43, DMX Krew, NULLPTR, 96 Back, Blackploid, Maelstrom, Annie Hall and Bochum Welt. Most releases are mastered at Smith's Computer Club studio in Sheffield, and the label has extended into hardware with the CPU Filter Eurorack module.
