What Breaks Labels Look For
Breakbeat A&Rs listen to the drums with more attention than anyone else in dance music, because in this genre the drums are the record. What they want is a break with genuine swing and dynamics: ghost notes, varied velocities, a pattern that changes across the arrangement rather than a two-bar loop repeated forty times. Chopping and resampling technique is directly audible and directly judged: clean edits, sensible transient handling, no smeared or over-compressed tails. Under that, the bassline has to lock to a syncopated pattern rather than a straight kick, which is harder than it sounds and is where most demos come apart. Beyond the drums, the genre is unusually open: psychedelic, funky, dark and melodic all have a home here.
Submission Tips
Clear your samples, or program the break yourself. This is the genre with the deepest sampling tradition and therefore the most exposure, and a label pressing vinyl will ask before it signs. Arriving with that already sorted puts you ahead of most of the inbox. Beyond that, these are small imprints where the label head reads the demos personally, so a short message naming a recent release will land better than anything longer. Send one or two finished tracks rather than a folder, and make sure the arrangement is DJ-usable with a clean intro and outro.

What BPM are breaks and breakbeat?
Nu skool breaks and modern breakbeat sit at 128–140 BPM, with 130–135 the most common club setting. Big beat runs slower at 120–130, and the harder progressive-breaks end pushes toward 140. The tempo matters less than the placement. A breakbeat record at 132 and a house record at 132 are separated entirely by where the snare lands and how much the pattern varies, so program the drums first and set the tempo around them.
Is breaks the same thing as breakbeat?
In practice yes, and this hub treats them as one. "Breakbeat" is the older and more literal term (music built on a sampled drum break) while "breaks" became the shorthand for the club-oriented nu skool scene that grew out of it in the late 1990s. Drum and bass and jungle also descend from the same breaks but sit at 160–180 BPM and have their own hub. If your record is syncopated, break-led and under about 145 BPM, this is the right hub for it.
