What Disco Labels Look For
Disco labels are looking for musicianship and for records that are legally releasable, in that order. The musicianship part means real playing or convincingly replayed parts: a walking bassline, live-feel drums, string and horn arrangements that follow actual voice-leading rather than stacked stabs. The legal part is not a formality. Much of what gets sent to these labels is built on uncleared classics and simply cannot be released, and it is the single largest cause of rejection in the genre. Warmth matters more than loudness; these catalogs are mastered for depth, and a brick-walled disco record sounds wrong immediately.

State your sample position in the first sentence of the pitch: original, replayed, or sampled-and-uncleared. An A&R reading a disco demo is already assuming a clearance problem, and removing that doubt early is worth more than any other line in your message. If you have replayed parts rather than sampled them, say who played what: session credits read as seriousness in this genre. And match the era the label works in. The reissue imprints and the modern edit labels want very different records.
Salted Music
Salted Music is an independent record label based in San Francisco, California, founded by Miguel Migs in 2004. What is the difference between disco and nu-disco?
Disco is the original form and the catalog built on it: live band instrumentation, 100–125 BPM, string and horn arrangements, and the Philadelphia and New York recording tradition. Nu-disco is the modern electronic genre made from that DNA: programmed or hybrid production, a firmly four-to-the-floor kick at 110–122 BPM, filtered loops and a club-oriented arrangement. In this directory the two overlap: several labels release both, and a re-work of a disco original is usually tagged nu-disco.
Can I release a disco edit commercially?
Only with clearance. An edit built on a commercially released master needs permission from the rights holders before it can be sold on Beatport, Traxsource or Bandcamp, and labels will not take that risk on an unknown artist's behalf. This is why replayed productions (where you re-record the parts rather than sample the recording) dominate what actually gets signed. If you work in edits, keep an original or fully replayed track to pitch with.
