Dubstep is 140 BPM built around a half-time drum feel, so the drums read at roughly 70 while the sub-bass moves at full tempo. The space that opens between those two clocks is the entire genre. It came out of Croydon in the early 2000s through DMZ, Big Apple and the Deep Medi Musik lineage, then split: a UK strand that stayed deep, dubby and system-oriented, and a heavier, sound-design-led strand that grew out of the US festival circuit. 29 active dubstep labels sit in this directory and both strands are represented, from Deep Medi Musik and Hotflush Recordings through Disciple Recordings, SMOG and Monstercat.
What Dubstep Labels Look For
Dubstep A&Rs listen to the low end before anything else, and they listen on a system. Your sub has to be clean, mono-compatible and genuinely present below 60Hz without swamping the mix. A bass patch that sounds enormous on headphones and disappears on a rig is the single most common rejection in the genre. On the heavier side, the bass design itself is the composition: the growls, the modulation, the way the timbre changes bar to bar. On the deeper side, restraint is the skill: space, dub delay, and a sub that carries weight through pitch rather than distortion. Either way, the drop has to land with intent and the drums have to hit hard enough to hold the half-time feel together.
Submission Tips
Reference your mix on a real system, or at least on a sub, before you send anything. More dubstep demos are rejected for low-end problems that never surfaced on the producer's monitors than for weak ideas. Then pick your strand honestly. The deep, dubwise imprints and the heavy sound-design imprints in this directory are effectively two different markets sharing a BPM, and A&Rs at both can tell within ten seconds which one you were writing for. Name a recent release when you pitch; it is the fastest way to prove you know which one you are talking to.

What BPM is dubstep and why does it feel slower?
Dubstep is written at 140 BPM, but the kick and snare are placed on a half-time grid (the snare lands on beat 3 rather than 2 and 4) so the groove reads at about 70 BPM while the hi-hats, sub movement and modulation run at the full 140. That double clock is what gives the genre its weight and space, and it is also why a dubstep record mixes cleanly with drum and bass at 140 and with house-tempo material at half speed.
What is the difference between deep dubstep and riddim or brostep?
Deep or dubwise dubstep keeps the Croydon and Deep Medi lineage: sparse arrangements, long dub delays, a sub that carries the record through pitch and weight rather than distortion, and a lot of silence. Riddim and brostep sit at the same tempo but put the bass design in the foreground: heavily modulated growls, aggressive mid-range, a drop built to be a spectacle. Labels specialise sharply along this line, so it is the first thing to get right before you submit.
