Trance is the most structurally formal genre in dance music: a long build, a full breakdown that strips back to pads and a lead melody, and an emotional release that the entire arrangement exists to set up. What Trance Labels Look For
Trance A&Rs are listening for the breakdown, and they will skip to it. The genre's whole payoff is whether the melody that emerges there is strong enough to justify the six minutes around it, which means it has to be a real melodic idea, memorable on one listen, and not a chord progression with a supersaw over it. The build back out has to be patient and correctly weighted: too short and the release lands flat, too long and it drags. Production standards are high and conventional rather than experimental: clean, wide, loud, with a big rolling bassline locked to the kick and plenty of stereo depth in the pads. Originality lives in the melody here, not in the sound palette.

Lead your pitch with the breakdown timestamp. It is the one genre where telling an A&R exactly where to listen is expected rather than presumptuous, because that is the section they are evaluating. Beyond that, target by sub-strand: uplifting, progressive trance, psy-trance and the tech-trance end all live under this tag and the labels here specialise hard. What BPM is trance?
Uplifting trance sits at 136–142 BPM, with 138 as the classic setting. Progressive trance runs slower at 128–134 and shares a lot of ground with progressive house. Psy-trance is faster and more rigid at 138–145 with a rolling triplet bassline, and tech-trance sits around 134–138 with a harder, more percussive character. Pick the strand first and the tempo follows. The sub-genres are far less interchangeable than the shared tag suggests.
How is trance different from progressive house?
They overlap at the slower end and many producers work in both, but the defining difference is the breakdown. Trance is built around a full stop: the drums drop out entirely, a melodic theme is stated in the open, and the arrangement rebuilds toward a release. Progressive house develops continuously instead, layering and filtering across the whole arrangement without ever fully clearing the floor. Trance also leans harder on melody as the primary hook, where progressive house leans on groove and texture.
