What is the difference between soulful house and deep house?
Both descend from the same Chicago and New Jersey roots, but they resolve differently. Soulful house leads with song: real chord progressions, gospel and disco harmony, and a full lead vocal, usually 120–124 BPM with live-feel keys and percussion. Deep house leads with mood and texture: sparser arrangements, vocals used as a sound rather than a song, and more emphasis on atmosphere than on melody. Do soulful house labels require a vocalist?
Not strictly, but the market strongly favours vocal records. Most soulful house releases are built around a lead vocal, with the dub and instrumental shipped as B-sides.
